The future of Windows is revealed.

January 26th, 2015

Randburg, Gauteng: 23 January 2015 – Wednesday 21 January 2015 unveiled a new generation of Windows, with a wide range of experiences designed to lead in a new era of more personal computing. Windows 10 will be delivered as a service to offer a safer, innovative and updated experience for the supported lifetime of the device.

"Windows 10 is the first step to an era of more personal computing," says Terry Myerson, Microsoft Executive Vice President of Operating Systems.

This vision framed Microsoft’s work on Windows 10, where Windows is being moved from its heritage of enabling a single device – the PC – to a world that is more mobile, natural and grounded in trust. Windows 10 represents the first step of a whole new generation of Windows.

Some of the new features introduced in Windows 10:

  • An updated version of Cortana (The Windows intelligent personal assistant) will now be available not only on phone, but also PCs and tablets.
  • There will be a new set of in-box universal applications for Windows 10 including Mail, Calendar, People/Communications, Photos, Videos, Music and Maps. These applications will be available across all Windows devices and will sync using OneDrive so you can use them seamlessly across devices.
  • A next-generation browser, codenamed Project Spartan, will be included with Windows 10. It is designed to put the web to work and is the only browser with built-in inking and easy sharing and collaboration.
  • Office for Windows 10 will offer new universal Office apps, great for touch-first productivity across devices – with new versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook.
  • Xbox Live and the new Xbox App bring new game experiences to Windows 10 PCs. This means you can do things like multi-player gaming from your PC and stream your favorite Xbox games to other Windows devices in your house.

Windows 10 supports entirely new, innovative experiences. To bring these experiences to life, two new hardware products were also announced:

  • Windows 10 is the world’s first holographic computing platform – complete with a set of APIs that enable developers to create holographic experiences in the real world. Microsoft HoloLens is the world’s first untethered holographic computer – no wires, phones or connection to a PC needed. Microsoft HoloLens allows you to create, access information, enjoy entertainment and communicate in new and exciting ways.
  • Microsoft Surface Hub is a new large screen device to empower teams to create their best work together. The Surface Hub is available in two sizes – 55” and 84” – and includes custom versions of Skype for Business and OneNote which take full advantage of the built in cameras, sensors, mics and screen with ink and touch. It includes white boarding, instant remote conferencing and the ability for multiple people to share and edit content on the screen from any device. It can also run any Windows 10 application natively.
